John C. Dernbach`s research focuses on environmental law, climate change and sustainable development. He served as Director of the Policy Office of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. The Policy Office is responsible for developing and coordinating policy and regulatory initiatives for the BDP, including the integration of sustainable development concepts into BDP programs. Immediately after graduating from Michigan Law School, Professor Dernbach taught legal writing at Wayne State University (1978-79), was an attorney for the American Lung Association of Michigan (1979-80), and co-authored a widely circulated and influential legal text, A Practical Guide to Legal Writing and Legal Method (Aspen, 3rd edition 2007). Over the next twelve years, Professor Dernbach worked to develop and implement nationally recognized programs to regulate coal mining, not coal, municipal waste, and residual or industrial waste for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources. During this period, he served as Associate Counsel (1981-87), Special Assistant (1987-92) and Director of the Department`s Advanced Science and Research Team (1992-93). Catherine Wasson joins Elon University after spending the last decade at Widener University School of Law in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, most recently as Associate Professor and Director of the Legal Methods Program. As director, Wasson revised and expanded a curriculum that covers skills such as legal reasoning, writing, research, and advocacy. Her teaching activities focus on legal writing and analysis, oral advocacy, tort and family law. Prior to Widener, Wasson worked as a staff attorney for the Minnesota Court of Workers` Compensation Appeals, overseeing laws and regulations relating to workers` compensation legislation and practice. Wasson received his law degree from William Mitchell College of Law in 1988. She graduated from Kent State University with a BA in English/Theatre Arts and a Masters in Language Arts/Theatre. «A law school textbook for courses on legal writing and legal analysis» – Cathleen S. Wharton joined the Legal Research and Writing Program at the University of Georgia School of Law in 1983 and has been its director since 1988. She literally wrote the book on her subject, as she is co-author of a leading textbook used by legal research and writing programs across the country, A Practical Guide to Legal Writing and Legal Method (4th edition, 2010, with John Dernbach, Richard Singleton, Joan Ruhtenberg and Catherine Wasson). She is also co-author of Citation Form for Briefs and Legal Memoranda (1997, with Daisy Floyd and Bertis Downs). In 1999, she was extensively cited in a Seattle University Law Review article entitled «Critiquing and Evaluating Law Students` Writing: Advice from Thirty-Five Experts.» Wharton develops teaching materials for the first-year legal writing program and teaches a section of the first-year legal writing course. She is also responsible for administrative tasks, text selection, supervision of other writing professors, and coordinating computer-assisted research training for first-year students.

Since 1989, she has been an associate faculty member of the Institute of Continuing Judicial Education (ICJE) and develops and conducts numerous seminars on legal writing or legal research for Georgian judges and court administrators. In 1993, she received the ICJE Award for Continuing Service to Judicial Excellence. From 1986 to 1990, she taught legal research and legal writing as part of the evening study program for paralegal studies at the Technical Institute of the Athens Region. Wharton also served as a consultant to the Athens law firm of Cook, Noell, Tolley & Aldridge from 1983 to 1990, assisting the managing partner in preparing civil cases for litigation and appeals. Wharton is a member of the Association of Legal Writing Directors, the Legal Writing Institute, and the American Association of Law Schools (AALS) Section on Legal Writing and Research. Wharton received his bachelor`s degree in journalism and his law degree from the University of Georgia. He is editor-in-chief of Agenda for a Sustainable America (Environmental Law Institute Press, January 2009) and Stumbling Towards Sustainability (Environmental Law Institute Press 2002), comprehensive assessments of sustainable development activities in the United States that include recommendations for future efforts. The books each have more than 40 contributing authors from universities and law schools, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and state government. Professor Dernbach is the author, co-author or contributor of chapters to eleven books and more than thirty articles for legal and peer-reviewed journals. He has lectured on environmental law, climate change and sustainable development to local, state, national and international audiences. In 2002, he received the President`s Award for Outstanding Achievement from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Alumni Association.

In 2008, he received the Douglas E. Ray Excellence in Faculty Scholarship Award and was also named one of three Distinguished Law Professors at Widener University. On April 22, 2010, he received an Outstanding Service to the Profession Award from the Environmental and Energy Law Section of the Pennsylvania Bar Association. Professor Dernbach is a board member of the ABA`s Environment, Energy and Resources Section. He is the past Chair and current Vice-Chair of the ABA Committee on Climate Change, Sustainable Development and Ecosystems and Climate Change. He is also a member of the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law. From 2005 to 2008, he was a member of the National Academy of Sciences` Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability.
